Hate trials that are so limited they’re effectively “crippleware”? Yeah, so do we! Sadly a few budding trialists brought it to our attention that we’re guilty of this heinous crime – today we’re putting that right.
The Jelastic PaaS is a polyglot platform, supporting applications authored in a variety of programming languages, and running a wide selection of application and database servers.
With this power comes great responsibility. A responsibility to set the resource limits high enough to suit a vast assortment of different technologies, frameworks, and server stacks. It turns out that some of your apps (particularly Java EE apps) are heavily performance limited – or may not run at all – with our old trial limits.
A trial without limits?
We considered simply giving trials a little more resources so that those more intensive apps would be able to run smoothly, but that would still undersell Jelastic’s true capabilities – if your application needs more power (even just briefly during startup), you’d be guaranteed a poor trial experience!
Instead, we decided to completely remove the technical resource limits on our free trial.
This means application performance during trial is an accurate reflection of application performance on paid accounts.

Default settings for each server type are unchanged; so you may still want to adjust the cloudlet limits when creating your environment to get the optimum performance for your particular application – but remember (on paid accounts) you only pay for your actual resource usage; scaling limits are just maximums, for budget control – so you could safely set the cloudlet scaling limits all the way to the max. and yet still only incur a tiny cost each month.
So why should I pay, ever?
Simple. Oh yeah, there is just one small detail – we didn’t remove all trial limits; only the technical resource limits. The trial is still 14 days – we feel it’s a reasonable amount of time to kick the tyres and get a feel for how the platform works with your project.
Yes, we know that everyone loves free stuff and we’d like nothing more than to be able to give Jelastic away free. Sadly server hardware, datacentre power, and Internet transit all have their costs (plus we mere humans are known to have families having food and shelter as essential application dependencies).
